Introduction
The following scenes mostly create a broader picture of Gerry Fegan, THE TWELVE's protagonist. All but one of them were written as part of the novel's revisions. As it turned out, these scenes didn't have a comfortable place to slip into the existing narrative, but the events became part of Fegan's life. In some cases, they are related by other characters in the published version of THE TWELVE. For instance, Fegan's experiences at a training camp (which make up the bulk of the deleted scenes) are told to David Campbell by Paul McGinty. That simply worked better in the novel itself, but here, when told from Fegan's point of view, it is a much more detailed narrative.
There are also two scenes set later in Fegan's life while he is imprisoned at The Maze which might shed some light on his transition from willing killer to a man struggling to come to terms with his own guilt.
A note of warning: while these scenes don't contain any real spoilers, you might want to read them after having digested the full novel. I think you'll enjoy them more that way.
